Mitra Valve Surgery

Most of the surgeons would suggest patient to do mitral valve repair first unless the patient is not suitable for the repair. Mitral Valve Repair is suitable for patients with leakage(regurgitation) or narrowed (stenotic) mitral valve. Most of the patient would rather repair than replaced as it can provide better long-term survival, better preservation of heart function, lower risk of complications and also blood thinning are not required.

Beside this, Mitral Valve Repair are very durable and 95% of the patient can continued to have perfect working valve for another 20 years.

If a patient is not suitable to undergo Mitral Valve Repair, surgeons will perform Mitral Valve Replacement with several varieties of artificial valves such as mechanical (metal) valves and tissue valves.

Metal Valves can last for a lifetime but the patients are required to take blood-thinning medications to prevent clotting. On the other hand, Tissue Valves does not require a patient to take blood thinning but it will only last 10-15 years.

Whether it is Mitral Valve Repair or Replacement, Maryland Heart Center handle all Mitral Valve Surgery with their latest diagnostic, medical and surgical procedures.
